Are we nearly there yet? I'm bored! I've got nothing to do!
How may times do parents hear that? Of course you're fully equipped with I-Spy books but as children thrive on variety we've collated a few alternate suggestions to keep your little ones further amused at home or on a journey.
Car Journeys:- a great opportunity to have a traditional game of I Spy! Also the Yes / No game - one person asks a series of questions and the other has to reply without using the words Yes or No. You could of course purchase 'I-Spy on the motorway' ! (Why is there always an odd shoe in the central reservation?)
Road Map Hide and Seek:- a fun way to teach kids how to use a road atlas ('flat-nav') a dying skill in these days of sat nav technology. Find a page with lots of stuff on and pick a village or small town (preferably with a silly sounding name). Pass the map or atlas to the other person who then has to find it!

Make a nature picture: When exploring, set a treasure hunt to find different gems - it could be leaves, flowers, sticks and stones. Use the treasures to create a picture or model.
Build your own den: either inside or outside take a large blanket or sheet, chairs and pegs and hey presto you can have hours of fun playing Chief I Spy in your special den. An indoor picnic is also great fun. Treasure hunt: Hide a number of objects around the house and get the kids to find them! (useful for finding odd socks!) Scavenger hunt: "I need three things starting with....(a letter)" Good for observation and recognition. Lentil pictures: Lentils, split peas, pulses and pasta stuck down can make some great pictures but perhaps not for the youngest children. What am I?: Describe something that the children know well and see if they work out what it is. e.g. "What's black and white and read all over?" - a newspaper! Timer: How long is a minute? You need a watch with a second hand or stopwatch function. You say "Go" and they say "Stop". Nearest to a minute wins. Numberplates: Make a fun three word phrase out of the letters on car number plates. 'XX 09 TMM' :- 'The Michelin Man' ....of course! Simple activity box: For car journeys you could get a small box (or clean margerine tub) and pack it with things to do such as story books, small colouring and activity books, notepad and pen/crayons Have you got a favourite simple kids game suggestion? Let us know and we may include it. |
